Aly Modleski’s Recent Interview For Online Publication BoldJourney
It was an absolute pleasure to chat with Anita from BoldJourney. We had an amazing conversation about discovering and embracing one’s purpose. We touched on those key qualities that artists should definitely work on developing. Plus, Anita and I dove into the exciting realm of creative minds teaming up and collaborating. Such good times!
BJ: Aly, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
AM: Definitely! Discovering my purpose as an artist has been a transformative journey filled with challenges and moments of clarity. From the earliest days of my life, I have been drawn to the world of art, expressing myself through painting since I could hold a pencil and later markers and brushes. However, growing up in Ukraine, an economically struggling country in the 1990s, I harbored concerns about the uncertain path of a “starving” artist.
So, I pursued a “real” profession and obtained a master’s degree in Banking and Finance, diligently climbing the corporate ladder for a while. Despite pursuing a different career path, my passion for art never wavered. In my spare time, I continued to paint and eagerly enrolled in drawing and painting classes with practicing artists in their studios to nurture my artistic skills.
It was during my time in Austin, Texas, after starting a family, that I made the pivotal decision to fully embrace my calling as an artist. Along with this decision came a nagging sense of guilt. I felt torn between spending time on my art and fulfilling household responsibilities or being present for my daughter. The idea of art as a “nice” hobby rather than a legitimate profession was a challenge I faced.
However, last year, during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a turning point occurred. I received a request to donate my paintings for charitable auctions and exhibitions, raising funds for urgent humanitarian causes in Ukraine. Witnessing my art raise over $5,000 and contribute to a total fund-raised amount of over $150,000 from three events was awe-inspiring. This experience revealed the profound impact of art as a tool for change.
This experience revealed that art is not limited to mere aesthetics; it can create a profound impact. By connecting art collectors with paintings that bring them joy and become cherished parts of their homes, I realized I could simultaneously support families and children affected by the war in Ukraine.
Although my art does not directly focus on political themes or portray the horrors of war, it serves as a vehicle for raising awareness about the ongoing conflict. As people discover my Ukrainian background, they express genuine curiosity about my family and the situation back home, allowing me to share real stories and shed light on the unreported struggles and devastation caused by the war.
This realization expanded my understanding of the purpose art can serve. It is not limited to adding aesthetic value to homes; it can also raise awareness about urgent causes, fostering empathy and understanding. My art has become a conduit for dialogue, sparking conversations about the ongoing war in Ukraine and its impact on the lives of its people, which often goes unnoticed by mainstream media.
In conclusion, finding my purpose as an artist has been a journey that encompasses personal growth and a commitment to making a difference. The challenges I faced along the way, coupled with the transformative events in my home country, Ukraine, have propelled me to understand the profound potential of art. I hope my artwork continues raising awareness, supporting urgent causes, and inspiring others to recognize the myriad purposes art can fulfill.
BJ: Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself.
AM: Certainly! I am a contemporary fine artist based in Austin, TX. I create unapologetically happy fine art paintings that celebrate the beauty of nature and bring joy to those who encounter them. I paint mixed media floral and cacti fine artworks, capturing the beauty of nature with vibrant colors and textured layers.
Since moving to Austin, I’ve drawn inspiration from the Texas Hill Country and family excursions, infusing my artwork with the region’s diverse colors and flourishing fauna. When I paint, I experience indescribable joy, playing with colors, blending the expected with moments of surprise, and creating depth through layers and texture.
I take great pride in knowing that my art has found a place in private collections across Europe and the United States. Currently, I am represented by Art For The People Gallery in downtown Austin and the Downtowner Gallery – Round Rock Arts. My paintings have found homes where they can be admired by art collectors and those who appreciate the beauty of art.
Whether starting your own art collection or seeking a unique piece to brighten your living space, my fine art paintings are investments that can be cherished and passed on to future generations.
Currently, I’m working on launching my website alymodleskiart.com.
I am also working on expanding the media I’m using and experimenting with 3D clay projects on canvas. So, stay tuned and follow my art journey on my Instagram profile.
BJ: If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
AM: Reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as having the most significant impact on shaping my path.
Firstly, my determination to pursue my passions was instrumental in overcoming challenges and obstacles. It allowed me to persevere through creative blocks and remain focused on my goals. To those starting their journey, I encourage cultivating a similar mindset. Challenges are a natural part of any journey, but holding onto your passions will carry you through. Develop resilience and tenacity, embracing the belief that your passions are worth fighting for.
Secondly, I found it crucial to step outside societal expectations and follow my heart. Society often imposes certain norms and expectations on us, which can lead us away from our true calling. I made a conscious decision to listen to my inner voice and prioritize my own happiness and fulfillment.
For those who are early in their journey, I encourage you to question societal expectations and norms. Don’t be afraid to deviate from the conventional path if it doesn’t align with your passions and aspirations. Trust your instincts and intuition, as they can guide you toward a more authentic and fulfilling life.
Finally, rediscovering and rekindling my love for art brought profound fulfillment and purpose. Nurturing creativity can unlock hidden talents and passions. Embrace the joy of creation, don’t be afraid to experiment, and take risks. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can support and inspire you on your creative journey.
BJ: Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
AM: Absolutely! As an artist, I’m always excited to collaborate with other creatives, especially interior design firms and home furniture and decor stores. I specialize in creating unique, original fine art pieces that can be customized to suit their specific needs and aesthetic preferences.
For interior design firms, I can collaborate on projects where my artwork can enhance a space’s overall visual appeal and ambiance. Whether a large-scale painting or mixed media art pieces in a specific color tone, I can create bespoke artworks that align with the design concept and bring a distinctly artistic touch to the environment.
Home furniture and decor stores can also benefit from collaborating with me by offering their customers exclusive, one-of-a-kind art pieces. I can create artwork that complements their existing product lines, providing customers with truly unique options for their homes.
I believe collaboration between artists and other creative professionals can produce exciting and mutually beneficial outcomes. And I am always open to new projects and collaboration ideas.
